WHAT SIZE COFFEE TABLE DO I NEED?

Finding the "perfect" coffee table is about more than just a style you love—it’s about the relationship between the table and your seating. Whether you have a classic bench sofa, a loungey chaise, or a massive corner sectional, getting the scale right ensures your room feels balanced and remains functional.

IDEAL COFFEE TABLE WIDTH AND HEIGHT

Scale is everything. If a table is too small, it looks like an island lost at sea; too large, and the room feels cramped.

Width: Aim for a table that is 1/2 to 2/3 the length of your sofa. This provides enough surface area for everyone to reach without the table becoming a burden.
Height: For the best ergonomics, your coffee table should sit 2”–4” lower than your sofa cushion height. This makes it easy to set down a drink without reaching upward or bending too low.

IDEAL COFFEE TABLE SHAPE

The layout of your seating often dictates the best shape for your table:

Bench Sofas: A rectangular or oval table works best to mirror the long, straight lines of the sofa.
Chaise Sofas: An oval or round table is ideal here. It softens the "L" shape of the chaise and allows for easier movement around the protruding corner.
Corner Sectionals: A large round or square table is the gold standard. It fits snugly into the "nook" created by the two sofa wings, ensuring everyone on either side can reach the center.

IDEAL COFFEE TABLE SPACING

The most common mistake is pushing the table too close or too far away. To maintain a comfortable "leg room" zone while keeping your snacks within arm's reach:

The Leg Room Rule: Leave 14”–18” of space between the edge of the sofa and the edge of the table. This is the "sweet spot" that allows for easy passage without making you feel disconnected from the table.

Designer Tip: If you have a particularly deep sofa, lean toward the 18” gap. For smaller apartments, 14” will keep the footprint tight and cozy.
